Influenza [Swine Flu] Virus

OMG OMG OMG.
I guess some of you guys were aware about the recent spring of an epidemic virus on Mexico. It firstly striked on the center of Mexico [ok, some sources indicated that it started somewhere on the US, then it moved to Mexico, but whatever D:], but now it is slowly moving to different zones and even to other countries like the US and Spain.

Now my state is starting to be on alert. There won't be classes tomorrow and maybe for the whole week, and is recommended to avoid crowded places, physical contact, etc. A few mins ago some of my friends and I went to some pharmacies to buy a mouth cover mask but they were out of stock.

[I also read this all could be only a "simulation", to see how fast countries can act in case of a real epidemic. But I wont take the risk. It's better to be safeee D:]

Swine flu illness in the United States and Mexico - update 2

26 April 2009 -- As of 26 April 2009, the United States Government has reported 20 laboratory confirmed human cases of swine influenza A/H1N1 (8 in New York, 7 in California, 2 in Texas, 2 in Kansas and 1 in Ohio). All 20 cases have had mild Influenza-Like Illness with only one requiring brief hospitalization. No deaths have been reported. All 20 viruses have the same genetic pattern based on preliminary testing. The virus is being described as a new subtype of A/H1N1 not previously detected in swine or humans.

Also as of 26 April, the Government of Mexico has reported 18 laboratory confirmed cases of swine influenza A/H1N1. Investigation is continuing to clarify the spread and severity of the disease in Mexico. Suspect clinical cases have been reported in 19 of the country's 32 states.

WHO and the Global Alert and Response Network (GOARN) are sending experts to Mexico to work with health authorities. WHO and its partners are actively investigating reports of suspect cases in other Member States as they occur, and are supporting field epidemiology activities, laboratory diagnosis and clinical management.

On Saturday, 25 April, upon the advice of the Emergency Committee called under the rules of the International Health Regulations, the Director-General declared this event a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

WHO is not recommending any travel or trade restrictions.

You do realize, everyday ppl die of flu? EVERYDAY!
Dear god, this is the "aviary flu" all over again. The exact same words were told by "specialist" and it is being handle with the exact same method by the media.

A flu is, all in all, a flu be it a pandemic flu or not. 9x% of the ppl infected with this virus have/are recovering just fine with good old chicken soup and bed rest.
Now in 3rd wold countries OR poor families OR unhealthy people (like seniors) this is a different case. Do not be fooled by the media. This story is selling like hotcakes. and why? Fear and panic SELL! And oh boy, they REALLY sell!
Yes, it is a very serious pandemic threat still, it is only a flu...


.. NOW if it's a cover up story for another type of "desiese" this is another story
You know ppl, this qualifies as a "Class 2 Zombie Outbreak" you know? I don't know about you all but imma start stockpilling water and canned food in my secret spot ( belle is out of this secret anti-zombie spot btw )

I thought the same thing too at first Eish, but my uncle in Hong Kong called me out of nowhere today to tell me to go buy a box of surgical masks right away before they sell out~ apparently there's been somebody in Hong Kong hospitalized with a suspected case of swine flu already. x_x (Gotta love global transportation, huh?) If the swine flu really is in Hong Kong, you can bet it's going to Taiwan, China, and all around Asia. I think Chinese people especially are very sensitive about these sort of outbreaks, since we got hit by the bird flu earlier. (I was actually in Hong Kong during that time, and my whole family came down with the flu at once~ in retrospect I think it was a mild case of the bird flu. x_x)

[Ed's Diary - Day 1]

I don't know the real magnitude of the epidemic, maybe it won't affect a lot of people or will be that "devasting". But me's not going to take risks, especially when on my family there are small children and they are the primary target of the Flu.

As of now, on my state and the state in which my family lives all the schools have been closed for a week, and many activities and events have been suspended.

In the meantime my friends and I are taking this with a bit of humour :p, and kind-of overreacting about the situation hehe.

Also it's interesting to see that people is really taking cautions; today at around 2:00am 2 friends and I went to buy some groceries and found the streets dead quiet. Not even the restaurants nor bars that are normally open almost 24/7 were open. Then when we were at the grocery store we found it half empty, lol, people did buy supplies.

As far as I know, it's all originating from the Mexico City area. Every reported case that I am aware of outside Mexico has been transmitted by someone who recently returned home from/left Mexico. At least, that's where the cases in the US are coming from. The little kid in Ohio (not far from where I live) that had swine flu had returned recently from a trip to Mexico, and it appears nobody else has the disease.

There's no reason to go out and be paranoid. As long as you can take an anti-flu drug (like TamiFlu) in the first 48 hours of the illness, you should be ok.

And, strange as it sounds, the further away from Mexico the virus gets, the weaker it seems to be getting.



So, um, don't plan any trips to Mexico, ok?

This reminds me of a game I like to play called Pandemic 2

Odd thing is, I decided from boredom whilst playing in school today to call mine Swine Flu, and the in-game virus originated in Mexico o.o odd how these things happen
