| Hey guys I just got Comcast internet and I heard one of my friends got a letter saying to stop doing restricted activities blah blah and reason is he was dling from torrents. Now my other friend thinks that it was probably due to torrents like p2p sharing and he has had Comcast for 7 years and has never gotten a letter. Now my question is am I being tracked if I download from like megaupload, rapidshare, etc for like anime or movies because I've dl'd at Roxis' place and he has Comcast. Post your advice, thanks. | |

| well i would say if i was a client from Comcast would be pretty easy fake a letter xD(since i would get letters from them). and i think is there a way to block the downloads as p2p.. so.. if Comcast wanna block that would block it and that means lose clients since alot ppl use it xD | |

| I have no idea how the law works in the US, but in europe (portugal) it's illegal to keep track of one's personal internet traffic. Now i know you guys have the "Patriot Act" although i have no idea if this particular situation applies to you.
If it does, and if in the US it's legal for an ISP to "take a peek" at your internet traffic, and divulge it to a third party , then my answer is : Yes, you can receive such a letter although being a portuguese citizen, i wouldn't give 2 shits about it or even lose 1 second of sleep. This is one of those cases where you really just have to ask other fellow americans

| honist they got bigger fish to fry.. they would rather get the people who do start the uploads.
also... even if you are p2p or torrenting it does not always mean u are breaking the law..

| Ask them to inform you of exactly what unapproved activities you are engaged in so you can avoid them in the future. I'd be interested to know if they can even tell enough to discern unapproved copyright infringement use from any other kind of use.
Now, could be that they have a clause in their small print that says "no peer to peer" or some jack like that, and in that case, it sucks but I don't think Comcast would actually enforce it to the point of shutting off their monthly checks from customers.
They would most likely prefer you quit doing your peer to peer but keep paying them. But, I guarantee one of the most important reasons for sending out the notices is so that they can cover their own ass. With piratebay and other torrent tracking sites being targeted legally, there is a big gray area about what qualifies as facilitating illegal infringement. So Comcast can say that they have gone to great lengths (pointing at the letters) to discourage illegal use.
I doubt they will go to the lengths of shutting down many connections, because that is REALLY bad press. They may fry a few big fish, but unless you're one of the big fish, you're probably good to go. |

| Another note, being someone who works in the film/media field, there's a lot of people who work hard to create and bring the content you enjoy to you.
I've downloaded as much as the next guy, and there's a ton of pure crap out there, and I think the current system is way overpriced. But, if you genuinely enjoy a film or album and have the means, I'd encourage you to buy a copy to support the folks who put it together for you. |
